Topica is a free service, heavily used and minimally funded. By default there's a painfully long stream of adverts during the subscription process. Once you've completed your details on the first page of the Topica site (Step 1 of 3) and it says you're almost done (Step 2 of 3), you can close the Topica browser window (no need to click anything further) or choose to further peruse the pages of advertising and offers provided. Note that some of this material is free and/or potentially valuable.
No need to worry about spam! You'll end up only getting emails from Faber Optimé (or Topica), not any 3rd party emails.
Once registered with Topica you can go to http://lists.topica.com/my to change your preferences and/or subscriptions at any time.
Note the option to consume subscriptions as daily digests - handy to minimise your inbox inflow, though at the price of currency (not money!).
